Men, Let’s Talk About Skincare

admin Uncategorized Leave a comment   , ,

When discussing dermatology and skincare, you might think that we’re communicating directly to women. And that we’re focusing on the cosmetic aspects of skin – wrinkles, age spots and acne. You couldn’t be more wrong.

Your skin is the largest organ on your body and serves to protect you from the elements and control your body temperature. Additionally, the condition of your skin can give myriad indications into your overall health.

For these reasons and many others, it’s critical that men also take their skincare very seriously and regularly see a dermatologist for screenings. From rashes to bumps, irregular moles, discoloration and more, men experience just as many problem skin conditions as women and shouldn’t consider skincare a female issue.

Additionally, the better daily care men provide their skin, the less likely they are to experience issues that could lead to a more serious condition. Let’s face it, most of you have probably dealt with an ingrown hair on your face due to improperly shaving. However, did you know that ingrown hair could potentially be cosmetically disfiguring or require ongoing therapy? Proper skincare can help prevent this type of issue.

Here are some general steps every many should take daily to put their best skin forward:

  • Cleanse daily. If you have oily skin, we recommend cleansing at least twice a day – once in the morning and once before bed. If you go to bed with a dirty face, you’re spreading germs, dirt and oil on your pillow all night long. Just imagine what’s on that pillow after one week of not washing. Find the cleanser that works best for your skin. For example, men with dry skin will want to use a cream cleanser to add moisture to their skin.

  • Moisturize. There are so many products available today specifically for men, there’s no excuse to not moisturize. This step will help keep your skin healthy and able to withstand more of what nature throws its way. Dry, cracked skin invites bacteria, which can lead to infection.

  • Shave the right way. Yes, there is a wrong way to shave. It’s the way that leaves you with cuts, bumps and irritated skin. It might take you a little longer to get in a proper shave, but your skin will look better and feel better. Believe us, people will notice.

  • See a dermatologist. You get your teeth checked by an expert every six months, so why wouldn’t you have your skin checked by an expert as well? Skin cancer is a serious issue and can show up in people of all ages, races and gender. Especially in Charleston where we have so many days of sunshine every year, the suns rays can quickly cause damage that you may not see or know to look for. The best way to ensure your skin is in tip-top shape is to have a regular screening by your dermatologist.
