How often you wash your face should change with the seasons. During the summer months we’re outside sweating and exposing our skin to the elements, so we should wash our faces more. Washing your face less in the fall will help to keep it from drying out.

Moisturize More.

Fall and winter weather dries out your skin. Make sure to moisturize every single day! The air is crisp and the wind is harsh on your face, so it’s important to use a heavier solution of moisturizer that’s oil based. Try to use a moisturizer with built in SPF to protect your skin against damaging UV rays.


Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!  

Exfoliate your skin once a week in order to get rid of any dead or damaged skin leftover from summer. Use products with the smallest beads possible – they aren’t as abrasive as ones with larger beads and crystals.

Avoid Hot Showers

As tempting as it is to take hot showers in the winter months, “bathing in hot water breaks down the lipid barriers in your skin, which causes a loss in moisture.” Instead, opt for a warm shower and try not to stay in for too long.

Makeup & Sweat – Why It’s Important to Wash Your Face

The daily environment takes a toll on your face’s skin, but what about when you add in other factors such as makeup and sweat? As dermatologists, we recommend you take the extra time to consider the skincare regimens needed to ensure a clean face at night. We have provided all the practices and tips you’ll need to know below.

Eliminating the use of daily makeup or avoiding the gym isn’t necessary. Simply take the right precautions to protect and cleanse your skin each night and after every workout.


When it comes to makeup, the longer you wear it, the more time it has to cause damage. Especially right before bed, cleansing your face as soon as possible will help your skin stay clear. Facial skin is full of pores and very absorbent, so think ‘would I want this inside of me?’ when applying makeup. During sleep, your body goes into recovery mode and heals all the tiny damages you may have done throughout the day.

The best habit to get into is taking your makeup off as soon as you feel you don’t need to wear it any longer. When getting off work or going back home for the day, take a quick shower or wash your face makeup off. Makeup cleansing cloths are great for when you’re feeling lazy – a quick swipe and your makeup is off.

If you know you will be wearing makeup all day long,  you can prevent any damage by purchasing cosmetics that actually benefit your skin. Expensive makeup doesn’t necessarily mean high quality – finding products that benefit your skin can be found in a range of prices. Look for products with SPF so you get coverage & sun protection in one step.

For those with oily skin, avoid comedogenic ingredients like lanolins, isopropyl myristate and red cosmetic dyes. A disclaimer: buying ‘mineral makeup’ doesn’t mean it contains all-natural ingredients and still has the ability to irritate skin the same way non-mineral makeup can. Products with talc and bismuth tend to cause irritation and breakouts.

We’ve explained the perils of not washing off your makeup, but what about when you’re at the gym and wearing makeup? Not many males can attest to this, but women often visit the gym after work while still wearing makeup. First things first, carry a pack of cleansing cloths in your gym bag. Wiping your face clean before sweating will help you avoid breakouts or over-drying, and helps with the cleansing process post-workout.

In general, sweating is your body’s way of cooling itself by perspiring out toxins from the pores. There is a barrier created when you have makeup on, making it difficult for sweat to break through. It then gets stuck on the surface of your skin and creates a greasy mess that could lead to breakouts and dryness when sitting on your face.

Sweating is actually good for your skin and is a great way to maintain clean, healthy skin. It releases toxins and dirt that is clogged in your pores. In fact, sweat isn’t what actually has an odor, but it’s the hair and skin follicles that provide smell when they aren’t clean.

While perspiration helps clear that dirt, it is then left on your skin to help cool your body temperature. While you’re still cooling down, the sweat will lower your temperature until you reach a normal state. This is when it drys on your skin and can cause damage. All of the toxins and dirt now on your skin should be cleaned off as soon as possible.

In addition, wiping your face while sweating only pushes the sweat back into your pores. Avoid touching your face throughout exercising and then shower or wash your face immediately post-workout. Exfoliating is important to aid your skin’s rejuvenation process, but doing so too soon after a workout may damage sensitive skin. Intense scrubbing should wait until after your skin calms down from exercise and closer towards bedtime.

One last tip for you – moisturize after cleansing! Especially in Charleston’s summer heat, extra body perspiration can leave your skin dry, so slather on some lotion. And not just on your face,  but your whole body!

  • Trichotillomania Tangle – A psychological condition when someone knowingly or even unknowingly pulls out their eyelashes due to stress or tension.

Let’s face it, most of us get it, but no one wants it. That’s why we’re here – to share everything you need to know about acne and provide some best practices for how to treat it.

Let’s begin with the basics. The term ‘acne’ refers to plugged pores, pimples and deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and even the upper arms. For most, acne begins in puberty but can still occur on adults up to their ‘50s.

Acne lesions are either inflammatory or non-inflammatory. Non-inflammatory includes open or closed comedones. Open comedones are known as whiteheads, and closed comedones are known as blackheads. Acne scarring occurs often and is most prominent in patients with inflammatory acne.

Acne affects 40 to 50 million Americans and is the most common skin disorder in the US. Nearly 80% of 11- to 30-year-olds are affected – mostly on the face, neck and back. By mid-teens, more than 40% of adolescents have acne or acne scarring, which requires treatment from a dermatologist.

The causes of acne have been contemplated for years, but the most common known causes or triggers are emotional stress, menstruation, oil and grease from makeup or the environment, hereditary factors, and an increase in male hormones found in both meals and females. A common misnomer, chocolate and greasy foods have not actually been shown to cause acne.

The best way to care for acne is not to pick at it; this helps you avoid scars. If acne doesn’t respond to over-the-counter medications, seek treatment early. General hygiene can also help with treatment, by washing affected areas twice a day with mild soap and water. Vigorous washing can irritate your skin and worsen your acne.

Also, shampooing your hair every day if it’s oily and using oil-free cosmetics and other products, such as sunscreen, will help prevent acne. Often, antibiotics that are taken orally are prescribed for acne. The antibiotic Isotretinoin is the only proven medication that safely and effectively controls the most serious form of the skin disease, known as severe cystic acne.

If you have mild acne and mild scarring, you are considered a good candidate for microdermabrasion, a process that scrapes away the surface to stimulate new cell growth. Also, new laser and light-based technologies have demonstrated that they improve mild to moderate acne after several sessions.

Lastly, professional treatment provides safe and effective treatments for acne scarring. Consulting with a dermatologist is recommended for everyone due to the fact that acne scars are unique and have complex characteristics. Determining an individualized treatment plan for you will lead to the most successful results.

Beat Wintery Dry Skin!

The relatively calm winters we experience in the south may have you thinking there’s no need to take initiative when it comes to skincare, but here’s why you should; your skin is your body’s first line of defense against the elements. The hot sun in the summer isn’t the only element to watch for – the dry, wintery air can leave your skin parched, causing it to crack and peel, which can invite bacteria and infection.

Dry Winter Skin

With any temperature drop, humidity levels will decrease. Often leading to dry, itchy skin, this humidity fall is why you must prepare and treat your skin in the winter. Turning up your thermostat isn’t the answer – not only will it raise your electric bill, but indoor heating only zaps even more moisture from the air.

To prepare for this dryness, you can install a humidifier in your home to keep air moist.  Before venturing into the cold outdoors, create a block by applying moisturizer to your most sensitive areas – lips, face and hands – and wear a hat, scarf and gloves to keep you protected.

When it comes to cleansing, extreme rubs, exfoliators and drying soaps should be eliminated from your bathing routine. Instead, go for mild, fragrance-free soaps and moisturizers, and use your hands and soft washcloths that won’t abrade your skin. Using sensitive skin products is recommended, even for those with normal skin. Also, be sure to keep your showers at lukewarm temperatures and as speedy as possible.  Locking in moisture with rich lotions afterwards also helps your skin stay hydrated.

When picking a moisturizer, WebMD suggests looking for these ingredients on the label:

  • Ceramides soothe dry skin and mimic natural substances of the outer skin that keep moisture in.
  • Dimethicone and glycerin draw hydration to the skin and hold it there.
  • Lanolin, mineral oin, and petroleum jelly (Hello, Vaseline!) aid skin with holding on to water absorbed while bathing.
  • Hyaluronic acid also helps skin hold water.


For anyone experiencing extremely dry skin, according to the AAD this may be a warning sing of dermatitis. If you feel this might be your situation, seek a professional diagnosis (with us!) because it often gets worse without treatment.
